Why choose an international school?
Unfortunately, the standard of public schools in Thailand is regarded as being relatively poor. Private international schools in Chiang Mai employ primarily international teachers with recognised teaching qualifications from overseas. Lessons are usually taught in English, or another international language and internationally recognised curriculums are followed. It opens the door to more further education establishments both in Thailand and overseas.
Unfortunately, the fees for international schools in Chiang Mai are comparatively high compared to private schools in the UK, the US and Australia. For many, this means that they are beyond parents’ financial means, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that they are forced into sending their children to public schools. Across Thailand, bi-lingual schools are increasing in popularity with lessons taught in Thai and another international language, usually English. The schools tend to employ teachers from countries such as the Philippines along with TEFL qualified and local teachers.
Bi-lingual schools
In order to reduce the financial burden, it is common for parents to send the children to a bi-lingual school until they reach secondary school age. Bi-lingual schools can cost as little as 10% of the annual tuition fees charged by the leading international schools in Chiang Mai. Attending a bi-lingual school initially ensures that the students have a reasonable understanding of English and the transition to an international school is straightforward for most students.
Factors to consider when choosing an international school in Chiang Mai
Choosing the right international school or bi-lingual school for your child is naturally a huge decision. As a parent, you will need to take several factors into consideration, including the type of curriculum, location, nationality of the teachers and, of course, class size and age ranges. Obviously, there are a lot of factors to examine and on this website, we have tried to categorise the international schools to make the task of drawing up shortlists easier.
